Graphic Designer / Brand, UI

PROJECT OVERVIEW

I attended the 2019 #SheHacks hosted by Canva. It was an all-girls hackathon with "hackers", "hipsters" and "hustlers" with the aim of bringing women in tech to build social impact projects and "write the future".

Throughout the weekend I worked in a team as a graphic/UX designer to build Late Bird -- the app to solve food wastage while letting you save money buying a meal.

With our app, even the late bird can catch the worm.

The Problem.

A WASTED OPPORTUNITY

Food retailers (eg. restaurants, cafes) often have unsold surplus food which they unfortunately have to throw away. Unsold food by a restaurant’s close is a missed opportunity.

Yet our team found that after work, school or university we would always want a bite to eat. At these times we would find ourselves weighing up eating dinner at a pricey restaurant or opting for a discounted arvo special meal. Most of us chose the arvo special (at least for myself when I look at my purse...)

Through some market research, we found that we weren’t alone and that 3.5 million Sydney siders wanted cheap eats during end of day hours. However, at the end of the day, 40% of restaurant foods go to waste

Something wasn’t matching up, so we decided to be the matchmakers.

The Solution.

To solve this problem we investigated into the current market and methods restaurants could minimise their waste. There was little involved in re-marking down the price of food to eliminate food wastage. However, we found as a team in our local suburbs that small businesses were often doing just that.

As a result, we decided to capture this market and make it easier for restaurants closing up to sell their left-over meals to a wider audience.

Late Bird was born. An app that reduces restaurant food wastage by streamlining food sales during discounted closing hours conveniently for hungry uni students and workers on the go.

User Journey.

During the course of our 2-day hackathon we built demo mockups on Figma and even built a prototype using Google Map APIs. The result was this user interface:

Over the course of the weekend I had been put in charge of alongside building mockups, designing the brand! While brainstorming this I wanted to capture some level of vibrancy and good will in being sustainable, however, not focus on the typical, “sustainable green” image as I thought that had been quite overdone.

As a result, I focused on building a bright colour scheme that would pop alongside a clean design. This would also stark in contrast to a key competitor we found that had been working on a very similar product such that we could differentiate ourselves.

Reflections.

Before #SheHacks, I had never found myself in the situation of being in a room filled with hackers, hipsters and hustlers. Let alone WOMEN hackers, hipsters and hustlers!

At the beginning of the event I found myself unsure of what to expect, shy to talk to people and hesitant in my suggestions. After all, most of these people would be far more experienced than me in the tech field.

However, over the 2 days there: I found myself inspired and welcomed by the women beside me. I learned more in the field of IT than I had learned in a classroom. And I gained a greater confidence in my work as a designer along my fellow teammates.

By the end of the event, we produced a product we were proud of with a sound mockup and working prototype and walked out with the prize for the "Most Commercially Viable Product".
